With unemployment at 10.2% in Colorado and the supplemental unemployment insurance ending in July, JFS has received an increased number of requests for financial assistance for rent and utility payments. Andrew Rankin was struggling to make ends meet for his family after a variety of unfortunate circumstances culminated this summer. As he put it, “life has been consistently chaotic, full of ups and downs,” including putting an entrepreneurial endeavor on hold due to the pandemic and recovering from surgery.

Andrew knew where to turn for help because JFS has assisted his family over the past four years. He was first acquainted with JFS through his daughter’s elementary school after her mother passed away. His daughter received trauma and grief counseling from Ilene, a JFS KidSuccess school-based therapist. “Ilene was amazing, and I am so appreciative of how she helped my daughter,” says Andrew. “I had recently lost my job and was also in the process of adopting my ex’s daughter. Ilene connected me to Ruby, JFS KidSuccess case manager, who was very helpful with job applications and adoption paperwork.” As his daughters moved into middle and high school, KidSuccess therapists were at those schools to support them through the transitions.

When Andrew returned to JFS this summer for help, Dicia, Family Safety Net case manager, worked with his landlord to make rent and utility payments so he didn’t lose his apartment. He also utilizes the food pantry about twice a month. “JFS has been very generous, particularly in recent months, to help us thrive instead of merely survive through the pandemic!” exclaims Andrew. “I am also amazed at the abundant amount of healthy food we receive from the pantry and I have been able to whip up many creative meals.”

He adds, “I have had a hard time trying to sort out my personal issues, but JFS has provided a supportive network and made the storm much more manageable; they help reinforce the boat. I don’t know where we’d be without their support.”
