Aging Care & Connections: Preventing Homelessness for Cynthia

Care manager and client

Cynthia was on the brink of homelessness three years ago when she contacted JFS for help. After driving a bus for 17 years, she had to cut her hours down to one day a week due to medical issues. She could no longer pay her rent and didn’t know what to do. JFS Aging Care & Connections care manager Eve Lowinger met with Cynthia and began putting a plan in place to ensure she wouldn’t be homeless.

While Cynthia temporarily stayed with her mother and then a motel, Eve helped her apply for and receive social security benefits, Disability, and Medicare so she could leave her job. “Because I have bad knees, I could no longer drive and could barely walk,” Cynthia explains.

“From the first time I met Eve, she has been so kind. “She helped me find a doctor—the best one I’ve ever had, made it possible for me to leave my job, and found me an apartment I could afford.”

Over the last three years, Eve also arranged transportation to a variety of appointments and errands, took Cynthia to pick out a new bed, and arranged for monthly food deliveries from the food pantry. JFS has also provided Thanksgiving meals, holiday gifts, and winter survival kits, which Cynthia whole-heartedly appreciates. “Last year I received the nicest coat I had ever owned for a Christmas present and the year before that I got a beautiful matching pajama, slippers, and robe set,” Cynthia remarks.

“Eve brightens my day every time I see or talk to her,” Cynthia says with a smile. “Whenever I have questions, she is the first person I turn to. Anything I’ve needed over the past few years, JFS has been there for me. My life is 100% better and only good things have happened since Eve and JFS came into my life!”
